We are looking for a skilled BIM & Template Library Manager who will own, build, and maintain a standardized library of BIM components (families, templates, detail content, etc.) for mechanical engineering systems. This person will ensure consistency, efficiency and accuracy in BIM workflows, while also being able to contribute in a production environment (coordinating models, preparing deliverables, clash detection, etc.)
Location: 100% remote. Working hours are based on US Central Time.
About us:
Abstra is a fast-growing, Nearshore Tech Talent services company, providing top Latin American tech talent to U.S. companies and beyond. Founded by U.S.-bred engineers with over 15 years of experience, Abstra specializes in sourcing skilled professionals across a wide range of technologies to meet our clients’ needs, driving innovation and efficiency.
Job Description:
Job Functions, Essential Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and evolve a centralized BIM component/template library for mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. This includes Revit families, templates, detail items, annotation styles, sheets, view templates, and other reusable content.
- Establish standards, naming conventions, parameter usage, levels of detail (LOD), and metadata associated with BIM components so that models are consistent, maintainable, and interoperable across projects.
- Ensure that the template library supports sustainable design, energy efficiency, and performance needs.
- Perform quality control of BIM content: check for correct geometry, parameter naming, parameter types, shared vs. project, phasing, etc.
- Coordinate with mechanical engineering modeling staff, BIM/VDC coordinators, and other trades (electrical, plumbing, fire protection, etc.) to ensure that templates meet the real needs of projects and that content is usable.
- Provide guidance/training or documentation to staff on how to use the template library, best practices, and BIM standards.
- Participate in production modeling work: create or assist with mechanical system modeling, clash detection/coordination, preparing deliverables for design reviews, construction documents, shop drawings, etc.
- Review project models / deliverables to ensure compliance with internal BIM standards and quality expectations.
- Manage versioning of templates and content: track changes, roll out updates, retire obsolete content.
- Investigate and implement improvements in BIM tools, automations (scripts, macros, Dynamo or similar), plug‐ins or additional workflows that increase productivity and reduce errors.
- Occasionally support project coordination / field verification to ensure that BIM content reflects as built or site conditions when needed.
Required Qualifications / Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Several years of hands-on experience in mechanical (HVAC / plumbing / piping etc.) BIM modeling (especially in Revit).
- Deep knowledge of BIM standards and best practices: e.g., parameter management, project vs. shared parameters, view templates, worksets, phasing, level of detail, file organization, etc.
- Experience building and maintaining template / family libraries—creating families, managing their parameters, ensuring consistency, flexibility, and performance.
- Strong understanding of mechanical system components (e.g. ductwork, piping, equipment, controls, hydronic / chilled water, etc.), their fabrication, installation constraints, and how they are represented in BIM.
- Experience with clash detection workflows, coordination with other trades.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment: meet deadlines, adapt to changing project needs, support multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving mindset.
- Good communication skills: able to explain standards, mentor others, coordinate across disciplines.
- Proficiency with Revit (mechanical / MEP), Navisworks or similar model aggregation/clash detection tools; plus familiarity with Dynamo or other automation tools is a plus.
- Experience with version control / content management (could be using BIM 360 / Autodesk Docs / equivalent) is highly desirable.
Nice to have:
- Experience working on sustainable / high performance building projects (LEED, energy modeling, etc.).
- Prior exposure to mechanical engineering consulting firms (or MEP engineering firms) or design/build projects.
- Experience customizing or developing tools / scripts to automate repetitive modeling or content management tasks.
- Familiarity with technology trends relevant to mechanical systems: Building Performance, Controls, Indoor Air Quality, etc.
What We Offer:
- Opportunities for professional growth and development.
- A collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- The chance to work on impactful projects with a talented team.
- Excellent compensation in USD.
- Hardware and software setup (mandatory).
